Shaun T Rockin Body Torrent Shaun T John Phillip Sousa (; born June 26, 1964) is an American singer, songwriter, dancer, and choreographer. He is best known as the lead singer, songwriter, and lead dancer of the alternative rock band Shudder to Think, and as the founder of the non-profit organization Food for People. He has released several solo projects since the mid-1990s, including five albums under the name Sousa, the two award-winning albums Run-D.M.C., and Triumphant Return, the soundtrack to the American television series Kojak, and a box set of his "music from and inspired by" shows, titled Music from the Edge. He is also a frequent collaborator with comedian Bill Hicks, appearing in Hicks's music videos as well as his concerts, and has written songs for other artists, including R.E.M. and Elton John. Early life Sousa was born in El Paso, Texas, to a family of Polish descent. He moved with his family to Levittown, Pennsylvania, in the early 1970s and graduated from Bucks County Central High School. In 1981, Sousa entered the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied literature and philosophy. He worked briefly as a DJ at the college radio station WUPH. Sousa moved to New York City in 1982 to pursue a career as a musician. Albums His first band, the Fireballs, released an album in 1987 and disbanded soon after. Sousa briefly joined New Jersey indie rock band Yawgoons, where he played drums in their 1993 demo and remained their drummer until 1996. Sousa's first commercial success came with the band Shudder to Think, formed in 1993 with bassist/guitarist Dan Tracy and drummer Mike Kinsella. He was previously married to musician Marie Menken, and his uncle, Leslie Griffin, served as Shudder to Think's bassist for a brief time before Tracy. Sousa began writing songs, and the band released three albums, including The Big Fellow (1995) and Welcome to the Occupation (1996). The band disbanded in 1999. Shaun T is the title of a series of documentaries produced by Ben Silverman in 2009 and written by Jeffrey Jones, based on the life and times of punk icon, music executive and manager of Fugazi, Ian MacKaye.
